A Family of Faith for the Family of God

Missions

At Grace United Methodist Church, we volunteer our time and resources to the Missions Programs not as a formal exercise, but with dedication and passion to help worthy causes. We attempt to raise the awareness of these causes to encourage support and participation throughout the year. Grace’s Missions Programs extend beyond the Church to our communities and to the world. We unite as a family to make a difference.

Financial support has been provided to:

·       Top performing students in Ghana who cannot afford to pay for higher education. The cost of sponsoring a student for a school year is $500.00

·       El Porvenir, a program that works to improve the standard of living of poor people in rural Nicaragua through sustainable water, sanitation, and reforestation projects.  In 18 years, El Porvenir has completed over 600 projects and planted over 278,000 trees.

·       The Long Island Council of Churches, an emergency food program, by promoting the Ken and Jean Larson Memorial Sunday (in honor of the founders of this program). Also, we continue to collect non-perishable food items weekly for this program.

·       The Anchor House Program in Brooklyn, a residential drug rehabilitation program for men and women that include both religious and practical counseling. One of the primary missions of the Anchor House is to enable the residents to lead meaningful, productive lives after they leave the program.

·       The United Methodist Camping and Retreat Ministry. The camping programs at Epworth, Kingswood, and Quinipet have served children, youth, families, and adults since 1947.

Missions Fundraising - In 2007, a fundraising dinner was held to support Habitat for Humanity in Nassau County in its mission to provide housing to working families in need. A check for $4,000.00 was presented to Habitat for Humanity. In 2008, a Missions Brunch was held to support the Annual Conference's Youth initiative to raise funds for Heifer International. The Missions Committee raised $1,200 for this initiative.

Food Drive for Island Harvest - On Saturday, November 22, 2008, ten members and friends of Grace Church held a food drive to benefit Island Harvest,an organization that delivers food to soup kitchens, food pantries and other emergency food programs throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Volunteers encouraged shoppers to: donate canned food, purchase a Thanksgiving trimmings bag, or make a monetary donation. Shoppers purchased 39 Thanksgiving bags. For each bag purchased, the supermarket donated a turkey to Island Harvest for distribution to families. In addition, we collected a substantial amount of canned food.  You can view a short clip of the food drive on the Multimedia page on this website.

Volunteer at the Salvation Army - For three years, volunteers assisted the Salvation Army in Hempstead in serving a Thanksgiving Meal.  The participants assisted in all aspects of the meal including serving food, clearing tables, cleaning-up, and welcoming the residents.
